Dr. Vinay Kumar (All India Institute of Medical Science, New Delhi, India)
Marvellous technological advances of the last two decades in the field of oncology have outpaced parallel development of understanding of social-economic, emotional and physical difficulties of cancer patients. These remediable issues along with gender bias may impede breast cancer patients’ access to evidence-based curative medicine. It was our pleasure to share that Problem List of Distress Thermometer may not encompass all the prevailing issues of breast cancer patients. Acknowledgement of our work at Kyoto Breast Cancer Consensus Conference 2011 has reinforced our effort to identify, understand and resolve patients’ concerns.

Dr. Nobuko Tamura (National Cancer Center Hospital, Tokyo, Japan)
Thank you for awarding me this prize. Because of the unfortunate timing in Japan it must have been most difficult to coordinate an international conference in Japan therefore this award had especially great meaning for me. I was so glad to enjoy friendly conversations with global leaders working in breast cancer divisions. It was something special to be able to listen directly what their current thinking is just now. I am deeply grateful to the chairman and staff of the conference. Also Dr.Kinoshita, Dr.Shimizu, Dr.Akashi and my advisers, Dr. Yamashita and Dr.Takahashi.

Dr. Kumar and Dr. Bhasker took up the theme of the survivorship for patients from various issues which should be studied, and particularly care about patient’s psychosocial issue. They conducted a survey questioning each patient who had visited for their radiotherapy and analysed their problems. These results will be informative for the improvement of the patient’s psychosocial support.

Dr. Tamura et al chose the theme of nomogram which was one of the themes of the conference. They made their own nomogram by using their patient population. There was also another poster presentation from Singapore which had the theme of Memorial Sloan Kettering Nomogram to validate in South Asian patient population. Their future collaboration will be very much expected.
